You may have seen in the news recently that the laws governing the use of tooth whitening products has changed.  

It is now illegal for anyone other than a dentist to prescribe tooth whitening treatment, dental therapists and other clinicians can only provide this treatment under supervision of a dentist and after adequate training.  

This new law came in to stop unqualified people offering tooth whitening treatment in the UK - since they did not have the required training in this treatment they did not have the full understanding of issues that arise as tooth whitening treatment is not suitable for everyone.

Early Age Interceptive Orthodontic Treatment

Why do Appledore Dental Clinic Bracknell recommend early treatment for your child?

When dental treatment is started at an early age, more conservative procedures are possible allowing most children to benefit from having their teeth straightened without the need for painful and traumatic extractions.  Most people think that crowded teeth need to be treated by taking out teeth, whereas the crowding is generally caused by lack of growth of the jaws and not the presence of too many teeth.                   

We try limiting extractions to cases where there is very severe crowding.

Non Extraction Orthodontic Treatment

Using dental appliances at an early age can gently correct the shape of the jaws, by creating space to allow the teeth to erupt into the correct positions and eliminate the need for those dreaded extractions.                               

This dental option is mostly used in children but we can in suitable cases also use it in teens and adults. 

We like to see your children as early as possible to assess their orthodontic needs and we find that placing dental appliances early can allow us to treat quite difficult cases with the minimum of fuss.  Poor growth and bad habits can cause a misalignment of the jaws - if this is not corrected at an early stage it can lead to more complex dental treatments and extractions to correct later on.

An Orthodontic Consultation is recommended at age 6 to observe how your child is growing, so we can intercept with dental treatment as soon as is necessary. 

A good reason for your child to have an Orthodontic Consultation would be if they have:-

• Immature swallowing (tonguethrust)
• Thumb or finger sucking etc.  

These habits can damage the shape of their mouths and cause them problems later.
