Dental Mavericks helping children in Morocco - Bracknell Dentist Dr Teresa Day's update on the 2013 mission

24.09.12 We had problems getting the equipment thru customs and Cally Gedge now has to spend tomoz trying to get this sorted out - agghghghghghhgh

25.09.12 phew!  Finally customs have allowed our equipment thru. It will be at El Jabah this evening so we'll be able to start treating the children tomorrow :)

26.09.12 Waiting for the local anaesthetic to arrive (as we can't bring that in with us we have to source it locally), this delayed us starting treatments. I saw a 10 year old boy with big black holes in his front teeth, managed to fill them and make them look nice, he went out beaming and was was told it had made his year. Between us we’ve treated 70+ children today, mainly extractions. Very draining physically and emotionally - expecting to do the same again tomorrow.

27.09.12 I saw a 6 year old girl today with 2 abscessed teeth - she smiled all the way thru the treatment when we took them out - she was a joy to treat and parents were very grateful. All in we treated over 90+ children today. Some very emotional moments with the scared ones, and hugs and kisses after treatment. Ran out of supplies so we had to finish earlier than expected.

28.09.12 Will be a day to rest before we travel home on 29.09.12  I'm already looking forward to coming back next year!

In the meantime Dr Teresa looks like witchypoo with her broken tooth, no news yet on how this happened - good job we know some very good dentists, she'll be needing one :)

Invisalign Teeth Straightening? It's The Best Thing I Have Ever Done

“I met fellow dentist Teresa at a dental conference and she suggested that she could straighten my teeth with an appliance called Invisalign, a clear plastic brace which is almost invisible. 

I'd looked into getting my teeth straightened before but had been told by various orthodontists that it was a difficult job and I would have to wear head gear (a very unattractive metal device worn on the outside of the face and head). 

I just accepted the way my teeth were but felt embarrassed by my smile. I was getting married the following year so when Teresa suggested it I jumped at the chance to go ahead with Invisalign.  When the treatment plan came back it said I needed to wear Invisalign for 3 years, this was very daunting but I wanted a nice smile so much that I decided to  commit myself to it.

If a tooth is knocked out what do I do?

If a tooth is knocked out you should:

• Without delay call your dentist for an emergency appointment
• Find the missing tooth if possible
• Gently rinse, but do not scrub the tooth to get rid of dirt or debris
• Place the clean tooth in your mouth between the cheek and gum
• Never attempt to replace the tooth into the socket. This may cause further pain
• Go to the dentist as soon as possible. If it is within a half hour of the injury, it could be possible to re-implant your tooth
• If it is not possible to store the tooth in the mouth of the injured person, (e.g. young child) wrap the tooth in a clean cloth or gauze and immerse in milk

Extruded tooth:

• If the tooth is pushed out of place (inward or outward):
• It should be repositioned to its normal place with very delicate finger pressure
• Never force the tooth into the socket
• Hold the tooth in place with a damp tissue or gauze
• It is imperative that the injured person be seen by a dentist within 30 minutes

TEN TOP TIPS FOR SCHOOL STARTERS

1. For consistent cleaning, children should brush their teeth and gums at the same time every day. The first brushing should take place after breakfast and children should rinse their mouths with an alcohol free mouthwash. The second daily brushing should be just before bed, with no more snacks after this.

2. Only use the recommended amount of toothpaste and ensure all teeth and gums are cleaned thoroughly. Toothpaste should not be swallowed. You can use different sized inter-dental brushes to clean plaque from inaccessible areas.

3. Parents need to brush their children’s teeth or help them brush their teeth until they are about six. They need to monitor their brushing until they are about ten. Toothbrushes should be changed every three months.

4. Ensure children eat a healthy diet and reduce their intake of high sugar content foods. What goes into your child’s packed lunch can be very important as they will not have a chance to clean their teeth until they get home from school. Keep snacks between meals to low-sugar or sugar-free foods such as cheese, fruit and nuts.

 5. What your child drinks can have just as much effect on their teeth as what they eat. Milk and water are suitable drinks to quench their thirst. Beware of high energy sports drinks as they have a very high sugar content.

6. Children should have visited the dentist before they are three. If they haven’t been arrange an appointment.

7. Ensure their visit is a positive one. Children will often take their cue from parents when visiting the dentist. If older brothers and sisters are going to the dentist, bring their younger siblings along so they can see what’s going on, get to know the surroundings and maybe even get a go in the chair.

8. Children’s teeth should be checked 3 times by the public health dentist during primary school. Ensure this is happening.

 9. Arrange preventative fissure sealants for children reaching the age of six or seven as directed by your dentist. Follow up at six or twelve months intervals.

10. If contact sports such as football, rugby, hockey or hurling are being played at the school ensure that your child has a mouthguard.
