- Smoking
- Drinking alcohol to excess
- Poor diet
- HPV
Tobacco
is still the main cause for mouth cancer, however experts now suggest that the human papillomavirus (HPV),

An estimated 60,000
people in the UK will be diagnosed with mouth cancer in the next

Risks
to look out for include mouth ulcers that do not heal within three weeks, red and white
patches and lumps or swellings in the mouth.
All Appledore patients have a full
examination at their annual dental check ups.
- As well as checking your teeth for signs of tooth decay, our clinicians also look at the health of your gums and check your jaw joints.
- Additionally, at no extra cost, adult patients at Appledore are all checked with the Velsope (oral cancer screening technology), to assist in the prevention of this disfiguring form of cancer.
- Does your dentist offer this free service? If not, why not?
Mouth Cancer Action Month in November is organised by the British Dental Health Foundation to raise awareness of the disease. www.mouthcancer.org
